It's Okay for Normal Not to Be Normal!

"That's okay, that's normal for your age." "That's normal for this season of life." "That's normal for their age." "That's normal for your body type."

If I had a dime for every time I heard one of these well-intentioned reassurances, I'd be retired on my own private tropical beach right now.

For some reason, the idea of "normal" never quite sat well with me. It’s like when someone says, “You’re just tired because you have kids,” and I want to say, “No, I’m tired because my brain is constantly in overdrive and I never get a moment to rest!” These reassurances often feel like a brush-off, a way to dismiss the gnawing feeling that something isn't right.

For years, I was disconnected from myself, and one of the casualties of that disconnect was my intuition. That powerful, gut-feeling superpower we women are supposed to have? Mine was on mute. Instead, I bought into the dreaded “It’s normal.” But every time I asked, “Is this normal?” my intuition was waving red flags. Those reassurances of “Yes, it’s absolutely normal!” didn’t cut it because it wasn’t normal for me.

Here’s the thing: everyone’s normal is different. What feels okay for one person might be a complete nightmare for another. And sometimes, seeking that stamp of normalcy is just an excuse to avoid doing the hard stuff… like listening to our intuition and admitting that something needs to change.

Take health, for instance. Ever gone for a check-up, and the doctor says, “Your results are a bit o but still in range. It’s normal.”? It’s like being told your kitchen is a little on fire but, hey, still in the range of normal flames! If it doesn’t feel right, don’t settle. Push back and say, “Okay, but I want to optimize my health. What can I do to make it better?” The same goes for every area of our lives.

Breaking the Cycle of Normalcy

In today's world, it's easy to feel pressured to fit into what society considers "normal." But what if breaking away from the norm could actually elevate our lives and set new standards?

Think about it. Every significant advancement in society came from someone daring to challenge the status quo. Women in history who broke barriers didn’t do so by accepting what was considered normal. They trusted their intuition, recognized that the “normal” wasn’t right for them, and took bold steps to make a change.

Consider the story of Rosa Parks. It was considered "normal" for African Americans to give up their seats to white passengers. Parks refused to accept this and sparked a revolution. Or think about the many moms who have dared to start businesses from their kitchen tables, refusing to accept that being a mom means sidelining their professional aspirations.

Even in everyday life, challenging normalcy can lead to growth. Maybe it’s not “normal” to prioritize self-care when you have young kids, but if it means you’re healthier and happier, it’s worth it. Perhaps it’s not “normal” to change careers in your 40s, but if it aligns with your passion and purpose, why not?

By rejecting the idea of a one-size-fits-all normal, we not only improve our own lives but also contribute to a more dynamic, diverse, and inclusive society. Our willingness to break the cycle and redefine what’s normal sets new standards for future generations.

Strategies to Reconnect with Your Intuition

If you’ve been feeling out of sync with your intuition, here are some simple exercises to help you reconnect:

1.     Quiet Time: Take a few minutes each day to sit quietly without distractions. This could be in the morning before everyone wakes up or in the evening when the house is calm. Focus on your breathing and let your mind settle. This quiet time helps you tune into your inner voice.

2.     Journaling: Write down your thoughts and feelings. Don’t worry about grammar or structure; just let the words flow. Journaling can help you uncover patterns and insights that your intuition is trying to communicate.

3.     Mindful Movement: Engage in activities that connect your mind and body, such as yoga, walking, or dancing. Pay attention to how your body feels and moves. This awareness helps you become more attuned to your inner signals.

4.     Gut Check: When faced with a decision, pause and ask yourself how you feel about each option. Notice any physical sensations or emotions that arise. Your body often reacts before your mind has a chance to rationalize.

5.     Trust Your First Instinct: Practice acting on your initial feelings without overthinking. Start with small decisions, like choosing what to eat or which route to take. The more you trust your first instinct, the stronger your intuition becomes.

6.     Seek Nature: Spend time in nature, whether it's a park, beach, or your backyard. Nature has a calming effect and can help you clear your mind, making it easier to hear your inner voice.
